A Chesterton man who crashed his van into a 16-year-old boy while drink driving, and then failed to stop, has been sentenced at Oxford Crown Court.
The court heard that the 40-year-old lost control of the van, crashing into the bus stop where the boy was waiting for a bus after his shift at work. The driver then failed to stop at the scene, but then crashed into a traffic-calming island.
The boy was seriously injured in the accident which threw him some distance down the road and knocked him unconscious. His injuries were said to be life-changing.
A passing police officer spotted the boy lying on the ground.
The man was caught after officers followed a trail of diesel to the man’s van, parked near his home. He was found asleep inside.
Once in custody, the defendant was found to have 122mcg alcohol per 100ml breath, putting him nearly three-and-a-half times the legal drink driving limit of 35mcg.
After pleading guilty to drink driving and dangerous driving, the man was jailed for three years and banned from driving for four years thereafter. He will have to take an extended retest before getting behind the wheel again.
Investigating officer PC Harry Welch of the Bicester Roads Policing Unit said: “This was a truly shocking case that demonstrates the selfishness and appalling consequences that drink driving has.
“[The defendant] has been given a three-year prison sentence, but I know that what happened that night to the victim, and the trauma he and his family had suffered is immeasurable.”
