A Sheffield man has been jailed for drink driving after a pursuit ended with him trying to ram his way through police out of a cul-de-sac.
Officers spotted the 27-year old on Sheffield Parkway on 12 April, swerving between lanes in the early hours of the morning. They signalled the man to pull over, but he instead sped off.
The chase ended with the defendant trapped in a cul-de-sac where his driving became more and more erratic. He drove into several parked cars before reversing through a large brick pillar. In a desperate final attempt at escape, he drove straight at the pursuing officers, shattering headlights and crushing the police vehicle’s bonnet.
Sergeant Scott Sarson of the Sheffield North East Neighbourhood Team, said: “[This man’s] actions showed little regard for the safety of anyone else on the roads.
“I hope this sentence gives him a chance to think about his behaviour and prompts him to think twice before acting so recklessly again.”
The man pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, escaping lawful custody, criminal damage, and drink driving at Sheffield Crown Court.
The judge jailed him for 23 months as well as banning him from driving for a further four years. Should he wish to drive thereafter, he must also take an extended re-test.
