A motorist who had previously admitted to drink-driving was reprimanded by magistrates after turning up intoxicated for his sentencing hearing.
Neil Horner, 49, appeared at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court to be sentenced for an incident in which he was found to be nearly four times over the legal alcohol limit while driving a blue Mitsubishi in Shanklin. The hearing was adjourned after it became clear he was under the influence at the time of his court appearance.
Magistrate Jan Routledge told Horner that he appeared not to fully understand the seriousness of the proceedings due to his condition. She instructed him to return to court on 12 December, stating that he must attend the next hearing sober or face being held in contempt of court.
The original offence involved Horner providing a breath test reading of 128 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit in England is 35 microgrammes.
In addition to the drink-driving charge, Horner has admitted to two counts of assault by beating, committed on the same day in July. He was also made subject to a restriction prohibiting him from entering a nursing home.
Sentencing has been postponed to allow the court to proceed once the defendant is in a fit condition.
