An Isle of Wight motorist has been banned from driving for three years after being caught drug-driving twice—committing his second offence while still under police investigation for the first.
Alan Tinsley, aged 40, of North Road in Shanklin, appeared before Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 9 May.
At an earlier hearing in February, Tinsley admitted to drug-driving in Sandown on 30 August last year. Then, at a separate court appearance in April, he pleaded guilty to possession of a Class C drug and two additional counts of drug-driving, which took place in Brading on 12 November.
Prosecutor Laura Jenking-Rees told the court that Tinsley was already being investigated for the August offence when he committed the second batch of offences in November. On both occasions, he was found driving a Subaru Legacy while over the specified limit for cannabis. During the second incident, he was also over the legal limit for cocaine and was found in possession of pregabalin, a Class C drug.
Defending, Oscar Vincent said Tinsley had made efforts to turn his life around. He stated that his client had adopted a more “pro-social lifestyle” and had cut ties with individuals linked to his past behaviour. Vincent noted that Tinsley no longer owned a car and spent most of his time indoors.
Tinsley, who is currently unfit to work, was sentenced to a 12-month community order. This includes 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days and a 90-day electronically monitored curfew from 6pm to 6am. He was also disqualified from driving for 36 months, ordered to pay £85 in costs, and a £114 victim surcharge.
