David Brown, a 64-year-old resident of Chestnut Walk, Hungerford, is facing potential jail time after crashing his car into parked vehicles while being more than four times over the legal alcohol limit. The incident occurred on Thursday, 7th December last year, around 5:20 pm near his home.
Brown was spotted driving erratically and swerving across the road. When attempting to park, he collided with parked cars, causing damage to two wing mirrors. Police conducted a roadside breath test, which he failed. Further tests revealed that he had 141 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, significantly above the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
In court, it was disclosed that Brown has five prior convictions, including a drink-driving offence within the last decade. This history makes a minimum three-year driving disqualification unavoidable upon sentencing.
Defence solicitor David Anderson suggested that the high alcohol reading would necessitate pre-sentence reports. The magistrates agreed and noted that due to the extreme level of alcohol, sentencing guidelines indicate a starting point of a custodial sentence.
Brown, who appeared in court wearing a dark suit and open-necked shirt, was released on unconditional bail and subjected to an interim driving disqualification. The case has been adjourned until Tuesday, 13th February, for the probation service to prepare a full pre-sentence report considering all sentencing options, including imprisonment.
