Google has now reported that not only does it’s driverless car recognise road vehicles, it can also differentiate between bikes, pedestrians and other road users.
However, many people are still asking how does the technology do this.
Well, the latest report from Google may shed a little more light on the matter.
Anyone who has followed Google, even in the most cursory way, will not be surprised to read that algorithms are involved in the car’s detection systems.
By being shown a large number of bikes with it’s cameras and sensors, the car’s computer has been effectively taught what a bike looks like from every angle.
Google’s report stated: “ Our software learns from the thousands of variations it has seen — from multicolored frames, big wheels, bikes with car seats, tandem bikes, conference bikes, and unicycles”.
Many people will not recognise some of those bike names in the list however, if they saw them on the road they would recognise them as cyclists and know how to avoid them.
However, self drive cars and computers in general, are a little different. They have to be taught what each of them look like and how to avoid them.
It was averred by the Washington Post that when motorists and cyclists come into close proximity it can be a dangerous situation. However, they continued that with the pending introduction of autonomous cars and their handling of busy traffic type situations, roads, towns and cities should become safer places in which to travel.
