A foreign student faces severe repercussions after being apprehended for drink-driving without a valid licence or insurance. Ranjodh Singh, 23, was stopped by police in the early hours of Christmas Day, 25 December, on London Road in Great Glen.
Officers from Leicestershire Police noticed a blow-out on Singh’s Nissan Qashqai around 2 am and approached the vehicle. Detecting the smell of alcohol, they conducted checks and discovered that Singh, in the UK on a student visa, lacked a driving licence and was not insured to operate the car.
Singh was arrested and taken to a police station, where he provided a breathalyser reading of 96 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, nearly three times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.
At Leicester Magistrates’ Court on 16 January, it was revealed that Singh’s conviction could jeopardise his future in the UK. His legal representative, Harvinder Gahir, stated: “Unfortunately for Mr Singh, this is going to have horrific consequences because he’s here in the UK on a student visa. He was living in Great Glen and was driving a short distance from his friend’s address.”
Singh pleaded guilty to drink-driving, as well as having no licence or insurance. He received a 12-month community order, including 100 hours of unpaid work, due to the high alcohol level. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £114 victim surcharge and was banned from driving for 24 months.
