New figures released by price comparison website, Moneysupermarket.com has shown that Hinckley and Bosworth is one of the worst places for drink driving convictions in the country.
Over the past 12 months, Moneysupermarket.com analysed 9.8 million car insurance quotes to determine the worst areas for drink driving convictions.
In the Leicestershire region, Hinckley tops the list with 1.52 convictions per 1,000 drivers. This figure is 70% higher when compared with the average conviction rate throughout Leicestershire and 45% above the national average.
Leicestershire police figures show that 40 motorists were caught drink driving within the borough between August 2015 and 2016. During this time, one motorist was caught for drink driving.
A spokesman from Moneysupermarket.com warned about comparing data for small areas with larger ones.
2 areas beating Hinckley were Crewe, with 1.66 convictions per 1,000 drivers and Llandrindod Wells, with 1.55 convictions per 1,000 drivers.
Consumer affairs expert at Moneysupermarket.com, Kevin Pratt stated: “Most people rightly view drink and drug-driving as totally unacceptable but our analysis shows a small minority are still getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
“This could be because they forget alcohol can stay in the system for a long time after the party is over, leading to them being convicted the following morning when they think they are sober.
“There are serious consequences if you’re caught drink or drug-driving, including a driving ban of at least a year and an unlimited fine, as well as a possible jail sentence of up to six months.
“What’s more, an endorsement for drink or drug-driving will sit on your licence for 11 years and you’ll have to declare the offence when you apply for car insurance for five years.
“The message is clear: if you’re in any doubt about your sobriety, don’t drive. The temporary inconvenience you might suffer by not driving is a far better option than the life-changing upheaval that follows a conviction.”
