Five Months Jail For Seven-Time Drink Driver

Nov 16, 2021

A Cambridge man with six previous convictions for drink driving has been jailed after police caught him drunk at the wheel for the seventh time.

Huntingdon Magistrates heard that police pulled over the 32-year-old’s Ford Transit van because it was showing as having neither tax nor MOT.

On getting out of the van, police described the defendant as “obviously drunk, slurring his words heavily, and very unsteady on his feet.”

A roadside breath test gave a reading of 125mcg alcohol per 100ml breath, while a later evidential reading following his arrest gave a reading of 97mcg. The legal drink driving limit is 35mcg.

Additional checks by the Beds, Cambs, and Herts Road Policing Unit also found the man had no insurance and was disqualified from driving until January 2024.

Detective Sergeant Mark Dollard said: “This was Morrison’s seventh drink driving offence and magistrates felt the risk posed to the public was too great for his sentence to be suspended.

“Drink driving is one of the fatal four causes of collisions on our roads and if Morrison wasn’t pulled over when he was, the consequences of his actions could have been much worse. We can’t be everywhere, but this case highlights that we could be anywhere.”

After pleading guilty to drink driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and driving without an MOT, magistrates jailed the man for five months as well as banning him from driving for a further four years.
