A 20-year-old man has pleaded guilty to charges of drink driving in Yeovil, Somerset, after being pulled over by police for having a broken rear brake light.
When officers pulled over Reece Joel Raybould, they found him to have a pint glass and a bottle of alcohol sitting in the central console. When they asked if he had been drinking, he said he had drunk a pint 10 minutes earlier, and then failed a breathalyser test.
He admitted to driving in High Lea, Yeovil, on September 17 after consuming excess alcohol.
Officers told the court how they were on patrol in a marked vehicle at 4.30am when they saw a black VW Golf being driven along the road.
“It had a defective rear brake light, so the police followed it towards Glenthorne Avenue and onto High Lea where they saw the vehicle mount the nearside kerb before returning to the carriageway,” said prosecutor Emma Lenanton.
“They stopped the car and saw the defendant at the wheel with a front seat passenger who was his girlfriend.
“A pint glass was also in the centre console along with a bottle of alcohol, and when they asked if he had been drinking, he said he had drunk a pint 10 minutes before.”
After returning a positive result for alcohol, Raybould was arrested, and a further test showed him to have 50mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.
The court banned Raybould from driving for 12 months, fined him £200, and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
