A father from Knighton, Powys, made the reckless choice to drive while under the influence of alcohol as he headed to pick up his children from school.
Mihaly Eszlatyi, a 41-year-old Hungarian national, was found to be driving his black Kia Sportage in Knighton around 3 pm on May 10, with his wife as a passenger. Despite consuming alcohol since the morning, Eszlatyi was more than double the legal drink drive limit when he was stopped by the police.
During the hearing at Welshpool Magistrates’ Court, it was revealed that Eszlatyi had been drinking since approximately 10:30 am. However, he admitted that he hadn’t considered the amount he had consumed when his wife asked him to drive her to pick up their two children from school.
Eszlatyi explained to the court on Tuesday, June 13, that the family had been facing harassment incidents when their children walked home from school, which influenced his decision to drive.
Having previously pleaded guilty to drink driving, Eszlatyi’s case was adjourned by the magistrates. They ordered a pre-sentence report due to the significantly high alcohol reading observed during the incident.
