A driver in Maidstone was arrested for drink-driving after drawing police attention by excessively sounding his horn in the town centre.
The incident occurred in January when officers noticed a silver Range Rover Sport repeatedly beeping its horn on Maidstone High Street. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers detected the smell of alcohol coming from the driver, identified as 35-year-old Ivo Redev from Coxheath, Maidstone.
Redev admitted to having consumed a couple of beers before driving. A roadside breath test confirmed he was over the limit, registering 80 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath—more than double the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.
He was subsequently arrested and charged with drink-driving. At Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on 3 March, he pleaded guilty to the offence. Representing himself, Redev told the court: “I don’t know what to say. Yes, I had a couple of beers. I am a delivery driver; I don’t know what else to say. I don’t normally drink.”
The court imposed a 17-month driving ban and fined Redev £120. He was also ordered to pay a £48 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs, with payments set at a rate of £20 per month. The magistrates advised that completing a drink-driving rehabilitation course could reduce his ban by a quarter.
This case serves as a reminder of the risks of drink-driving and the consequences of attracting police attention through disruptive behaviour.
