As Euro 2024 kicks off, local authorities in Stockton-on-Tees have launched a road safety campaign aimed at reducing drink and drug driving incidents during the tournament. In collaboration with emergency services and local schools, Road Safety GB North East (RSGB NE) is urging football fans to plan ahead and avoid getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs.
Data from recent sporting events suggests a sharp rise in driving offences during such times, with similar increases recorded during the 2022 World Cup. RSGB NE reported that between 2019 and 2023, over 1,200 people were injured in the North East in accidents involving drink or drug drivers. Of those, 381 sustained serious injuries, and 37 fatalities were recorded, underscoring the gravity of the issue.
The campaign, fronted by students from Tilery Primary School, is spreading the message that drivers should avoid any alcohol or drugs if they plan to drive. In particular, younger drivers, who account for a large proportion of offenders, are being targeted. Authorities are reminding the public that even small amounts of alcohol or drugs can impair driving ability, and drivers may still be over the limit the morning after a night out.
Increased police presence is expected throughout the tournament, with officers conducting random breath tests and drug tests on suspected drivers. With heightened awareness and enforcement, authorities hope to minimise incidents and keep roads safer.
