Amy Harrison, a 42-year-old teacher from Essex, has been permanently banned from the teaching profession following a drink-driving incident. The Teaching Regulation Agency panel found that Harrison had failed to uphold “high standards of ethics and behavior” after crashing her car while under the influence of alcohol in March 2022.
The incident came to light when concerns were raised by fellow staff members about Harrison’s behavior. On March 2, 2022, staff noticed that Harrison seemed unsteady and smelled of alcohol. The following day, Harrison did not show up for her lessons, and her car was later found at a roundabout with a smashed windscreen and deployed airbags. She was seen in a police car by a colleague.
Harrison admitted to the police that she had been drinking wine during lunch with a friend from 12:00 to 14:00, prior to the accident, which occurred around 16:30. Video footage of her roadside breath test indicated that she was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Despite the police deciding not to pursue criminal charges, the panel’s role was to determine whether the allegations against Harrison were proven on the balance of probabilities, which is a lower standard of proof than that required in criminal cases. The panel found that Harrison had shown limited insight and remorse for her actions.
Harrison resigned from her teaching position on March 31, 2022. The misconduct panel recommended, and Marc Cavey, ruling on behalf of the education secretary, agreed, that Harrison should be banned from teaching indefinitely. She may apply to have the prohibition order set aside after March 12, 2028.
This case highlights the importance of maintaining professional standards and the severe consequences of failing to do so, especially in roles that involve the safety and well-being of others.
