A man who rode an e-scooter while more than twice the legal drink-drive limit has been banned from driving for a year.
Dylan Kineton, aged 29, of Merriman Court in Londonderry, admitted at the city’s magistrates’ court to charges of driving the scooter without a licence or insurance and driving with excess alcohol.
The court heard that Kineton had been seen riding the electric scooter along Clarendon Street in Derry on 22 February.
In addition to the 12-month driving ban, Kineton was fined £300.
The judge was told that police stopped Kineton on Queen Street and observed that his eyes were glazed. He admitted having recently consumed alcohol.
An evidential breath test was conducted, recording 84 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.
A defence solicitor told the court that many people are “flying about Derry on these machines.”
Most, he said, were unaware that both a licence and insurance are legally required.
He added:
“No one has any idea as to the legal status of electric scooters.”
The solicitor explained that people often did not realise that, depending on the scooter’s engine size, riding them on public roads without proper documentation could constitute a criminal offence.
