Drug Driving Teenager Receives 18-Month Ban

Jul 7, 2020

A 19-year-old man from Carlisle has been banned from the roads for 18 months after being charged with drug driving.

Officials at Rickergate Magistrates Court heard how police witnessed the young man drive through a red light in the city on February 8.

Prosecuting, John Moran told the court that following the incident a roadside drugs swipe proved positive, while further testing showed him to have more than 12 times the legal amount of the cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine (BZE) in his system.

Tests also revealed traces of cannabis, however not at a level sufficient to break drug driving laws.

Mitigating, John Smith said that his client had cooperated fully with police. “He’s not been difficult at all,” he said.

Presiding magistrate Kevin Wilderspin told the defendant: “It’s very much a wake-up call”, adding that illegal drugs remain in the body for a long time after they are taken, with many young drivers ending up before the court because of it.

After pleading guilty to drug driving while over the prescribed limit for BZE, Mr Wilderspin banned the teenager from driving for 18 months as well as imposing a fine of £350 plus £85 costs and a £35 victim surcharge.
