For the first time in several key regions of the UK, drug driving arrests have outpaced drink driving offences, highlighting a growing threat on the country’s roads. Police forces in areas such as London, Manchester, and Glasgow have reported a significant rise in the number of drivers testing positive for drugs, particularly cannabis and cocaine. This shift marks a concerning trend, as drug-impaired driving becomes an increasingly common cause of road accidents and fatalities.
Chief Inspector Darren Griffiths of Greater Manchester Police pointed to the increased availability of roadside drug testing kits as a factor in the rise of arrests. “Our officers now have the tools to detect a wider range of substances, which means we’re catching more drug drivers than ever before. Unfortunately, this also means we’re seeing more accidents where drug use is a contributing factor,” Griffiths explained.
In 2024, the number of drug driving arrests has surpassed drink driving arrests in several urban areas, where recreational drug use is reportedly more widespread. Authorities are particularly concerned about young drivers, who are more likely to engage in risky behaviour behind the wheel, including using drugs before driving.
The rise in drug driving has prompted renewed calls for tougher penalties and better public education on the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs. Campaigners argue that many drivers are still unaware of the severe legal consequences of drug driving, which can include long driving bans, hefty fines, and even imprisonment for those involved in serious or fatal accidents.
In response to the growing problem, police forces are stepping up roadside checks and increasing public awareness campaigns. Offenders caught drug driving face penalties similar to those for drink driving, and authorities are warning that repeat offenders will face even harsher consequences. As drug driving continues to rise, law enforcement agencies are committed to tackling the issue head-on and ensuring that UK roads remain safe.
