A motorist has been disqualified after being caught drug driving following a police drone operation on the Isle of Wight.
Ziggy Lloyd, 21, from Shanklin, appeared before magistrates having pleaded guilty to drug driving, possession of cannabis, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.
The court heard the offences took place on 5 August 2025, when police observed two individuals riding Surron e-bikes while wearing balaclavas on Station Road. The pair were seen travelling across multiple routes, including Newport Cycle Path and Fairlee Road, before heading towards Seaclose Park.
Officers deployed a drone to monitor their movements, ultimately locating them in an area where children were present.
Lloyd was stopped by police and subjected to a roadside drugs test, which indicated the presence of cannabis in his system. Further analysis showed a level of 2.7 micrograms of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) per litre of blood, above the legal limit of 2.0.
In mitigation, the court was told Lloyd “deeply regrets” his actions and suffers from Asperger syndrome. His solicitor said the incident was impulsive and that Lloyd used cannabis to assist with sleep.
Magistrates described his behaviour as “foolish” and imposed a 14-month driving disqualification. He was also fined £140, ordered to pay a £66 surcharge and £85 in costs.
The case highlights the strict liability nature of drug driving offences, where exceeding the prescribed limit for specified controlled substances is sufficient for conviction, regardless of intent or personal circumstances.
