A 22-year-old driver who was found to be over both the drink and drug-driving limits, has been jailed for 3 years after he collided with another car, that collision causing a woman to lose her leg.
The driver, Steven Johnson had bought his Ford Focus car only the day before with the intention of using it to learn to drive.
Johnson, who had been drinking at a local pub during the day, was behind the wheel of his car when he ploughed into the back of another car parked at the side of the road.
35-year-old Natalie Griffiths was stood at the boot of her car when Johnson’s car collided, pinning her between both vehicles.
She was airlifted to hospital where she underwent several operations before finally losing her right leg, above her knee.
The court heard witnesses described Johnson running away from the scene and police found him getting into a taxi outside his house.
Johnson failed both drink driving and drug driving tests. It was discovered that he had been taking cannabis.
After his arrest, Johnson stated: “First time I bought a car. Got no insurance. I’m an animal. I smoke weed every day. Provisional. No insurance. I shouldn’t have driven the car.”
Johnson pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drink driving, drug driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
As well as being sent to prison for 3 years he was also banned from driving for 5 years and 6 months. He must also take an extended test before he can get his driving licence back.
