A 64-year-old man has appeared before magistrates after police caught him drink driving instead of walking the 400 yards to his home.
Worthing Magistrates Court heard that the man had gone for a drink after work and was seen getting into his van near a social club at 7.30pm. He drove the short distance to his home, but police caught up to him, finding him to be slurring his words.
He insisted he had only had two pints of beer, but evidence obtained following his arrest on suspicion found him to be over the limit for drink driving.
Police Constable Mark Gregory, from Sussex Police’s Roads Policing Unit (RPU), said the defendant thought he would get away with driving the short distance.
“Drink-driving is one of the fatal five reasons why people are killed or seriously injured on our roads,” he said.
“[He] lived just 400 yards away from the social club he attended for drinks after work, and obviously thought he would get away with driving the short distance rather than simply walking home.
“This case demonstrates that there is no excuse for drink or drug-driving and shows we are determined to catch offenders.
“[He] put himself and other road users at risk. He could have walked home, or he could have parked at home and walked to the social club. His poor decision has cost him his licence.”
After pleading guilty to drink driving, magistrates banned the man from driving for a year and ordered him to pay a £120 fine, £85 costs, and a £48 victim surcharge.
