Drink Driving Haulier Banned After Other Truckers Force Him To Pull Over

Feb 25, 2022

A 65-year-old truck driver has appeared in court after two other truckers forced him to pull off the road, fearful he was drink driving.

The two lorry drivers spotted the man driving erratically on the northbound carriageway of the A1(M) in Yorkshire and a subsequent breath test found him to be almost five times the legal drink driving limit.

The defendant was so drunk, police were unable to question him properly for more than 16 hours following his arrest.

Sergeant Mark Smith, a roads policing officer with South Yorkshire Police, said: “Dashcam footage of the incident shows how the lorry drivers… used their own vehicles to bring [the defendant] to a stop and immediately called 999,” he said.

H also added that the two lorry drivers in question “showed the majority of those who drive lorries for a living understand the dangers large vehicles pose to other road users/

“I would like to thank them for stopping a serious or fatal incident from occurring.”

After hearing a guilty plea to drink driving, Doncaster magistrates jailed the man for 16 weeks and banned him from driving for 32 months. He must also pay a £128 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
