Figures released by Merseyside Police has shown that whereas their drink driving campaign saw a lowering of drink driving cases by 30%, there has been a worrying 40% increase of drug driving offences.
However, police have stated that this rise is due to increased testing and new powers that were introduced in 2015.
Sergeant Paul Mountford, of Merseyside Police stated: “The decrease in positive tests and drink drive arrests for a second successive year indicates that drinking and driving is becoming less and less socially acceptable. …..it is disappointing that we have seen an increase in motorists arrested for drug driving…. I cannot stress enough the danger that these people present, not just to themselves, but to other road users too.”
