An Oxford property developer who crashed his BMW while three times the drink driving limit has been banned from the roads.
Magistrates heard that the 41-year-old lost control of his car on September 15 last year, crashing it into a ditch. Another driver witnessed the accident and contacted the emergency services.
A roadside breath test revealed the driver to have 144mcg alcohol per 100ml breath, putting him just over four times the legal drink driving limit of 35mcg.
Further blood samples taken in hospital a little later gave a result of 255mg alcohol per 100m blood, a little more than three times the legal limit of 80mg.
The man claimed he had swerved into the ditch to avoid a van.
Prosecutor Nony Umenyiora told the court that the defendant had a previous drink driving conviction from 2001.
In mitigation, the man submitted a letter of remorse to the courts, supported by four references. Before his appearance in court, the man had recently completed a four-week alcohol detox programme at his own expense and was also attending regular Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
After pleading guilty to drink driving, magistrates banned him from driving for 26 months and imposed a fine of £1,730. He must also pay £85 costs and a £173 victim surcharge.
