Emmanuel Osei, a 34-year-old resident of Maple Drive in Huntingdon, was found asleep in his Mercedes in the middle of the A1307 dual carriageway at Godmanchester on 28 January. Police officers, initially suspecting the vehicle had broken down, discovered Osei napping with the engine running at around 04:15 GMT.
Upon administering a breathalyser test, it was found that Osei was over the legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. He was subsequently arrested and charged with drink-driving. The following day, at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court, Osei pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court handed down a driving ban of three years and six months and sentenced Osei to 120 hours of unpaid community work to be completed within the next year.
PC Neil Game from the road policing unit commented on the incident, highlighting the severe risks Osei posed to himself and other road users. “Osei put himself and other road users at huge risk, not only by drink-driving but also by stopping for a rest on a dual carriageway. There is absolutely no excuse for drink-driving, and if you are tired, you should pull over in a layby or at a service station to take a break,” he stated.
