A 27-year-old dock worker from Sheerness has appeared before magistrates after crashing his car while driving under the influence of drink and drugs.
Medway Magistrates Court heard that the man crashed his car and fled on foot into a field on May 14, 2021. Police caught up to him quite quickly, however, and he was arrested.
Blood tests following his arrest found him to have 119mcg alcohol per 100ml blood, putting him around 1.5 times the legal limit for drug driving, which is 80mcg.
He was also found to have 261mcg of Benzoylecgonine – the metabolite of cocaine – per litre of blood, more than five times the drug driving limit of 50mcg. He was also nearly three times the legal limit for cocaine, with 29mcg per litre of blood against a limit of 10mcg.
Representing himself in court, the man apologised for his actions, adding:
“I only really drink at weekends and I have a medical condition. I have cut the drink out. I am on a zero-hours contract at the docks in Sheerness and at the moment I have debts of about £3,500.”
District Judge Stephen Leake banned the defendant from driving for 16 months and ordered him to pay a £95 victim surcharge and £85 costs. He must also attend five rehabilitation sessions and wear an alcohol abstinence tag for 90 days.
Kent Police added that officers will perform roadside breath tests on all drivers who commit a road traffic offence, regardless of whether or not they suspect the motorist of drink driving.
