A Darlington man, who attempted to drive home immediately after being banned from driving in court, is now serving time in prison. Steven Luck, aged 39, appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he received a 28-month driving ban and fines for a prior drink-driving offence. However, in a surprising turn of events, Luck chose to disregard the disqualification and proceeded to drive off in his car from the court premises.
Witnessed by police officers outside the courthouse, Luck was followed and promptly apprehended within 30 minutes of leaving. The arrest took place close to Darlington, where officers brought him back into custody. Following this second offence, Luck was sentenced to an eight-week prison term, handed an additional fine, and saw his driving ban extended by another 12 months.
In footage shared by Durham Police, Luck is seen acknowledging his disqualification, yet appearing unaware of its immediate effect. “But I didn’t know it starts straight away, does it?” he remarked upon arrest. This apparent misunderstanding did not prevent legal repercussions, as Durham Police moved swiftly to enforce his sentence.
On Wednesday, Luck faced Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court, where he was officially sentenced for driving while disqualified and driving without insurance. His actions prompted Durham Police to post the incident online with the statement, “That’s what happens when you push your Luck.”
This incident serves as a reminder of the consequences of disregarding legal restrictions, with authorities cautioning others to heed court orders to avoid similar repercussions.
