Devon and Cornwall Police have terminated the employment of PC Ian MacQueen following his admission of drink-driving. MacQueen was apprehended last December while off duty and later pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. In June, Plymouth Magistrates’ Court imposed a fine of £827 on him and issued a 22-month driving ban.
A subsequent internal hearing in September concluded that MacQueen had violated professional standards, specifically in areas of discreditable conduct and honesty and integrity. Acting Chief Constable Jim Colwell expressed that MacQueen’s actions severely undermined the expected conduct of police officers, whether on or off duty.
The force’s decision was to dismiss MacQueen without notice, categorizing his actions as gross misconduct. Furthermore, MacQueen has been added to a policing barred list, effectively barring him from future employment in policing or related law enforcement agencies. Colwell emphasised the importance of police officers adhering to the Code of Ethics, stating that MacQueen’s conduct failed to meet these standards. Despite the dismissal, MacQueen retains the right to appeal the decision through the Police Appeal Tribunal.
