Data Shows Significant Increase in Drug Driving Fatalities

Jul 31, 2024

New data released by the Department for Transport (DfT) in July 2024 has highlighted a significant rise in the number of drivers killed with at least one impairment drug detected in their system. Between 2014 and 2022, the number of such fatalities increased by over 70%. The report indicates that in 2022 alone, 185 drivers involved in fatal collisions had drugs in their system, compared to 106 in 2014.

The DfT emphasised that these figures might be underreported due to gaps in toxicology data, with not all deceased drivers being tested. The findings have reignited discussions around stricter penalties and further public education on the dangers of drug driving. The report’s authors hope the data will inform future policies aimed at reducing road casualties caused by impaired drivers.
