A man has been jailed after leading police on a high-speed pursuit through Peterborough while drink driving.
At around 11.30pm on 20 September, officers in an unmarked police car spotted the man overtaking a bus at speed and started to follow him, Cambridge Crown Court heard.
They pulled alongside the man’s BMW, attempting to pull him over, but he sped away at speeds of 65mph down one road and 85mph down another. The speed limit on both was just 30mph.
He then braked sharply, turning onto another side road and reaching speeds of up to 60mph, the defendant didn’t attempt to slow down for any of the speed humps and almost lost control as he tried to swerve his vehicle through chicanes.
Police finally apprehended the man after he pulled into a cul-de-sac, with two passengers fleeing the vehicle and throwing glass bottles at the officers in pursuit.
A roadside breath test gave a positive result, with an evidential sample following the man’s arrest finding him to have 76mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal drink driving limit is 35mcg.
PC Malachi Creedon said: “[The defendant] put innocent people in serious danger by not only getting behind the wheel of a car while drunk but also driving at dangerous speeds on urban roads.
“We will always look to deal with dangerous and drunk drivers robustly and this sentence shows how seriously these offences are also treated by the courts.”
After pleading guilty to dangerous driving and drink driving at an earlier hearing, the man was jailed for nine months and banned from driving for five years and seven months. He will have to take an extended re-test should he wish to drive again.
