An Essex man has been jailed for twelve weeks after police spotted him driving erratically, leading to his arrest for drink driving.
A witness reported the poor driving to police, who caught up with the vehicle and pulled it over on the A120 on 8 November.
After smelling alcohol on his breath, the officers conducted a roadside breath test which came back positive for alcohol, and an evidential sample at Harlow Police Station found him to be more than four times the legal drink driving limit.
Roads Policing Sergeant Chris Bramhill said: “We want to thank the member of the public who called us to report their concerns when they saw [the defendant] driving dangerously along the A120 that night. Being drunk, he wasn’t fully in control of the car and was a real threat to the safety of other road users.
“When police found him, he almost caused a collision and was speeding – it took two police vehicles to bring him to a safe stop.”
Appearing before magistrates just three days after his arrest, the 46-year-old was jailed for twelve weeks.
Last month, Essex Police made 98 arrests for drink driving, 78 for drug driving, and 21 arrests for failing to provide a specimen for analysis.
Inspector Matt Crow, Roads Policing Officer and lead of the Essex Police drink driving campaign, added: “My officers are dedicated to keeping the roads in Essex safe for everyone. Drink or drug drivers pose a greater risk to other drivers and pedestrians as they have impaired reactions when driving, meaning they could cause a serious collision. We will robustly tackle this issue over the coming weeks and anyone who is arrested for drink or drug driving could also find themselves spending Christmas in prison, away from their loved ones.”
