Carpenter Caught Drink Driving At Five Times Limit Jailed

Sep 8, 2020

A 51-year old carpenter has been jailed after he was caught drink driving in his white van.

The man, from Seaside, Eastbourne, was caught at over five times the drink driving limit in Warren Road, Brighton, while he was driving his white Volkswagen Transporter van.

He was found with 180mcg of alcohol in 100ml breath which is more than five times the legal limit of 35mcg.

His trial took place before District Judge Amanda Kelly at Brighton Magistrates’ Court, and there he admitted to both drink driving and driving with no insurance.

He was issued a three-year ban from driving, a jail sentence of 22 weeks, and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £122.

Another man in Brighton was arrested for drink driving, after which he threw a cup of coffee over a police officer.
Police were on patrol in Grand Parade, Brighton, when they stopped the man in his red Renault Megane. The 32-year-old was arrested after being found with 75mcg alcohol per 100ml breath.

Following his arrest, the defendant was placed in the back of a police vehicle, where he threw a cold cup of coffee over a police officer. He was later charged with drink driving and assaulting an emergency worker and obstructing police in the execution of their duty.

The railway employee was convicted of all three offences. He was given a 20-month driving ban, fined £1,106, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £110 victim surcharge

During the annual summer crackdown on drink and drug driving from 29th June to 12th July, a total of 83 drivers were arrested by Sussex Police.

Police commented: “Of those, seven have since been convicted in court. The remainder have been charged, released under investigation or released without charge.”
