A man has been convicted of drink driving after police spotted him driving suspiciously slowly on a 60mph road.
Elizabeth Blacklock, prosecuting, told Hereford magistrates that police spotted the man travelling at around 20mph on November 14 in the early evening. They were suspicious of his low speed and “poor lane discipline” on a national speed limit road.
They arrested the driver after pulling him over and receiving a positive result for alcohol in a roadside breath test.
Once in custody, an evidential sample found the man to have 90mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal limit for drink driving is 35mcg.
Representing himself, the 50-year-old offered his shame and remorse for his behaviour: “I cannot defend my actions, but I would like to point out that I was not really aware of the level of alcohol in my body.
“This was due to my naivety and had I realised this I would not have been driving.
“My family in Sutton were expecting me for Sunday dinner. We had a heavy night the night before and had spent all day not really doing anything before going out for what was going to be a lovely evening with my family, and I had clearly topped it up enough to be over the limit.
“I feel deeply ashamed that while putting lives in danger, I have also blackened my name.”
After hearing a guilty plea to drink driving, magistrates banned him from driving for 23 months and imposed a six-month community order. he must also pay a £120 fine, costs of £135, and a £95 victim surcharge.
