A 44-year-old woman from Newcastle, given a 36-month driving ban for drink driving in 2018, has been handed a further four-year ban after she was found passed out in her car.
Prosecuting, Ben Woodward told North Tyneside Magistrates Court that police found the woman, still serving a suspended sentence for her previous offence, on March 12.
“The defendant was passed out at the wheel and appeared drunk. She refused a roadside breath test but was arrested and did give a test at the police station.”
As well as her initial ban, she was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, for failing to provide a specimen and two counts of failing to report and accident.
Defending, Alanna Wesencraft told the court that her client had a strong work ethic but had lost her job and was currently claiming benefits.
“Her son has quite significant mental health problems and was in hospital just five weeks ago”, she added.
“That can put a strain on someone who themselves is having issues. In March this year, things had got really quite bad in terms of her alcohol misuse. She is still drinking but she does want some help.”
After pleading guilty once more to drink driving, magistrates banned her from driving for four years, imposed an 18-month community order, and ordered her to pay £60 in fines, £85 costs, and an £85 victim surcharge.
