A student in Teeside has been banned from the roads after police caught him drug driving, several days after he returned from a trip to Amsterdam.
The 27-year-old barman had consumed cannabis during his trip to the Netherlands’ capital, as many visitors to the city do due to its more relaxed drug laws.
Prosecuting, Tyler Plunkett told the court that the man was pulled over by the police as he drove away from his friend’s house and failed a roadside drug swipe, leading to his arrest.
Further analysis found the man to have 4.4mcg of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, in his system. The legal limit for drug driving is 2mcg.
Mitigating, Ross Tismond told the court that his client, who has one previous conviction for one offence, was “fully compliant” and cooperative with officers.
He said that the defendant had consumed cannabis while he was abroad some days previously, but “didn’t feel intoxicated” when he got into his car, adding that he had reflected on his “foolish actions” while in custody.
Mr Tismond also added that his arrest had been a “shock to the system” and that “he no longer uses cannabis”. In a letter to the court, the driver said the “repercussions aren’t worth it”, and that he hoped to be an engineer after completing his master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
After hearing a guilty plea to drug driving, magistrates handed the student a twelve-month driving ban and a court bill totalling £369.
