The Automobile Association (AA) has released a report indicating a sharp surge in drug-driving offences across the UK, with June 2024 seeing one of the highest recorded monthly totals in recent years. The report points to a combination of more frequent roadside drug tests and a growing trend in recreational drug use as the main drivers behind the increase.
According to the AA, drug driving is now a major road safety concern, especially among young drivers, who make up a significant proportion of those arrested. With more effective drug testing kits now in use, police forces are able to detect a wider range of substances, including cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA, all of which are common among drug-driving offenders.
The report has prompted renewed calls for increased public awareness campaigns and education, particularly targeting younger drivers. The AA has highlighted that while many drivers are familiar with the risks of drink driving, there is still a lack of understanding about how drug use affects driving ability. Some drivers mistakenly believe that certain drugs, particularly cannabis, do not impair driving as much as alcohol.
In response to the report, police forces across the country have pledged to continue their crackdown on drug driving. With roadside checks now a regular feature, drivers are being urged to avoid drug use entirely if they plan to drive, or risk facing severe penalties, including driving bans, fines, and imprisonment. The AA has also called on the government to consider introducing mandatory education courses for drug driving offenders, similar to those currently in place for drink drivers.
