A heartbroken father, Scott Webb, has launched a passionate campaign for lifelong driving bans for drink-drivers responsible for fatal crashes, following the devastating loss of his 19-year-old son, Aidan. Scott’s call for justice has garnered significant public support, with more than 19,000 signatures on his petition, but he vows to keep fighting until meaningful change is achieved.
A Tragic Night
In December 2022, Aidan Webb’s life was cut short when he was involved in a fatal crash caused by Tyler Wilkins, who was one and a half times over the legal drink-driving limit. Wilkins, aged 20 at the time, lost control of his Vauxhall Corsa while returning from watching England play in the Euros. The car also had significant mechanical issues, including a bald tyre and faulty brakes.
Aidan, who was a passenger in the vehicle, died at the scene. Three other young passengers sustained minor injuries. In September 2024, Wilkins was sentenced to three and a half years in prison and given a seven-year driving ban—a punishment Aidan’s family considers far too lenient.
A Father’s Plea for Change
Scott Webb, 52, has channelled his grief into a campaign to prevent others from suffering similar heartbreak. Appearing on the BBC’s Question Time, he argued for tougher laws, insisting that anyone who kills while drink-driving should be banned from driving for life. He said, “When Aidan’s killer comes out, he will be allowed to drive again in just a few years. That doesn’t seem right to me.”
Scott’s petition has rapidly gained traction, reflecting widespread public frustration with lenient punishments for drink-driving offences. “Our main aim is to introduce a law that means drivers who kill while over the limit are banned for life,” he explained.
The Irreparable Impact on Family
Scott’s pain is evident as he recalls his final words to his son: “Have a good night. Don’t let anyone drink or drive.” Reflecting on the tragedy, he said, “If I could turn back time and take his place, I would do it in a heartbeat.”
Aidan was on a gap year, preparing to study cybersecurity at university. His promising future was cruelly stolen, leaving an irreparable void in the Webb family. “We will never be the same again,” Scott shared. “I lost part of my life that day that will never come back.”
A Flawed System?
Scott criticised the justice system for its leniency, describing Wilkins’ sentence as insufficient. He revealed that the family had never received an apology from Wilkins, though his stepfather and mother sent a letter, which the family has not read. “It won’t help me in any way,” Scott said.
While he remains determined, Scott feels his concerns are being ignored by authorities. He raised the issue on Question Time and later met with his local MP, but has yet to receive a substantive response. “We are still waiting,” he remarked.
Government Response
The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the Webb family’s tragedy, stating, “Our thoughts remain with the family of Aidan Webb. Independent judges decide sentences, including whether to impose lifetime driving bans, but we are committed to ensuring punishments fit the severity of the crime.”
