Drink-driving laws are set to be tightened in England as part of a new road safety strategy. The Government has tabled the strategy, which proposes cutting the drink-drive limit. This means people would not be allowed to drink as much alcohol and legally get behind the wheel as is currently the case.
Bringing England and Wales into line with Scotland
The strategy proposes reducing the drink-drive limit in England and Wales from the current 35 micrograms down to 22. This is the existing threshold in Scotland. This would result in people passing the limit they can legally drive much more quickly if drinking alcohol. People are advised not to drink at all if planning on driving.
Under the lower limit, experts say in some cases just one drink, such as a pint of beer or standard glass of wine, could put someone over. They could face a driving ban if caught.
Wider changes to road law
The road safety strategy was published earlier this year and features a radical shake-up of road laws in a bid to reduce deaths and injuries. Over-70s will also face mandatory eyesight tests, and possible cognitive tests, to ensure they are safe to remain behind the wheel. Meanwhile, drivers could also be hit with penalty points for seatbelt offences.
No safe amount
Experts say there is no exact amount of alcohol someone can consume and ensure they stay below the drink-drive limit, due to individual factors like age, weight and metabolism. Police say people should avoid drinking any alcohol if they are getting behind the wheel.
Jurisdictional note: The proposed change would apply to England and Wales, whose current drink-drive limit is higher than that already in force in Scotland. The Scottish limit was lowered in 2014, and the strategy would bring the England and Wales threshold into line with it.
