A Birmingham City footballer has been fined and disqualified from driving after pleading guilty to drink driving following a serious three-car collision in Warwickshire.
The Crash
Marvin Ducksch, 32, was involved in a collision on the A3400 near Henley-in-Arden at approximately 22:30 on 6 April. The crash occurred just hours after Ducksch had appeared as a substitute in Birmingham City’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
In a prepared statement to police, Ducksch said he was driving home and admitted “he did have alcohol before he drove” and had “clipped an oncoming car and another one following behind.” One of the other drivers sustained a nosebleed and injuries to her forehead and thumb.
Ducksch stopped at the scene and remained until police arrived, checking on the welfare of the other motorists.
Breath Reading
Magistrates were told that Ducksch had been caught driving with 53 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, above the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
Sentencing
At Leamington Spa Magistrates’ Court, Ducksch pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. Chairman of the bench John Kiely told him: “You can consider yourself lucky first of all that you weren’t killed and secondly that the other drivers weren’t killed. That’s how serious this matter is.”
He was handed a 14-month driving ban, a fine of £16,155, compensation of £2,000, a £2,000 surcharge, and costs of £85.
Mitigation
Defence solicitor Julia Morgan, noting that Ducksch’s former clubs include Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund, said he had a promising career ahead of him. She added: “Mr Ducksch waited at the scene for the police. They didn’t arrive immediately but he waited and he checked on the welfare of the occupants of the other vehicles.”
