A motorist from Peterborough has been sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court following a crash in which he was found to be drink-driving with his children in the vehicle.
On 16 March 2025, Shahzad Nawaz, aged 47 and of Broadway, Peterborough, lost control of his BMW on Park Road at about 7 pm and collided with a brick wall. Witness reports from the incident suggest that the vehicle initially struck roadside trees and signs before the final impact. Emergency services attended the scene.
A female passenger sustained serious injuries that were not life-threatening, and Nawaz’s three children, who were seated in the rear of the car, received minor injuries.
Police carried out breath testing at the roadside, and Nawaz was found to have an alcohol level in excess of twice the legal limit. He was arrested at the scene.
Nawaz subsequently pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving and drink-driving. At sentencing on 4 December 2025, he received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. The court also imposed a 12-month driving disqualification, requiring an extended driving retest before motoring privileges can be reinstated. Additionally, Nawaz was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and to pay £1,187 in costs.
The case reflects the serious legal consequences of drink-driving offences in the UK, particularly where vulnerable passengers are involved. Under current motoring law, drink-driving convictions attract custodial sentences, disqualification and financial penalties, with the severity of sanctions influenced by factors including harm caused and the driver’s alcohol level.
