A recent survey suggests that a substantial proportion of UK motorists support the use of alcolocks (alcohol interlock devices) in the cars of drivers convicted of drink-driving offences.
According to the poll, around four in five drivers in the UK support alcolocks being fitted to vehicles of those found to have driven over the legal alcohol limit. An alcolock is a device that prevents a vehicle from being started unless the driver provides a breath sample below the statutory alcohol threshold.
The survey results indicate that 71 per cent of those in favour believe every convicted drink-driver should be required to have an alcolock installed in their vehicle. A further 23 per cent think the requirement should apply only to repeat offenders. Support was highest among younger drivers, with around 87 per cent of those under 25 and 86 per cent of drivers aged 25–44 backing the proposal, compared with approximately 73 per cent of those aged 65 and over.
Under current UK law, a driver caught exceeding the drink-drive limit faces a minimum 12-month driving ban, the possibility of a fine, and potential imprisonment. In some cases, courts may reduce a ban if the driver completes an approved rehabilitation course.
The survey was commissioned by a motoring organisation and reflects growing public interest in technological measures as a way of enhancing road safety. Examples of similar schemes exist overseas, where convicted drink-drivers may receive shorter bans in exchange for fitting an interlock device.
A spokesperson for the Department for Transport reiterated that road safety remains a priority and that the government continues to assess whether new technologies could contribute to reducing drink-driving incidents. A public awareness campaign reminding drivers of the dangers and legal consequences of impaired driving is also underway.
