Custodial Sentence Issued Following Fatal Collision Involving Motorcyclist in Wisborough Green

Oct 18, 2025

A sentence of eight years’ imprisonment has been imposed following a road traffic collision in which a 19-year-old motorcyclist sustained fatal injuries. The incident occurred on the B2133 at Newpound, near Wisborough Green, during the early hours of 30 June 2024.

The defendant, identified as 28-year-old Toby Spiring of Howard Place, Littlehampton, was found to have been driving while over twice the legal alcohol limit. Prior to the incident, alcohol had reportedly been consumed at a public house in Billingshurst. The vehicle involved, a Mazda CX-5 belonging to the defendant’s father, was being driven when a head-on collision occurred with a Lexmoto motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction.

The motorcyclist, named as Aidan Venison, had been returning home after an evening spent with friends. Despite the efforts of members of the public and emergency medical services, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The collision occurred just two days before Mr Venison’s 20th birthday.

At a hearing held at Lewes Crown Court on 14 October 2025, a guilty plea was entered for the offence of causing death by dangerous driving. The sentence was reduced from an initial term of 12 years in recognition of the early plea. In addition, a five-year driving disqualification was imposed, effective upon release, with an extended re-test required prior to any future licensing.

His Honour Judge Laing stated that Mr Venison had been riding “without fault” and described the outcome as “disastrous”. Victim impact statements were read to the court by Mr Venison’s family, expressing the enduring impact of the loss.

Tributes included remarks by Mr Venison’s father, who described his son as “a talented, funny, good-hearted soul”, and his mother, who stated that the opportunity to witness her son’s future had been taken away. The family spoke of the emotional and personal impact the incident had left on their lives, expressing their grief and sense of loss.
