A serving paratrooper has avoided a prison sentence despite leading police on a 70mph chase through York while over the drink-drive limit.
According to the court summary, the soldier—whose name was not released in the publicly available text—was clocked at nearly twice the speed limit as he sped through city roads. Officers eventually stopped him and found he had been drinking before getting behind the wheel.
While drink-driving combined with dangerous driving usually carries a high risk of custody, magistrates were told about the soldier’s military background and the mitigating circumstances surrounding his case. These factors led the court to impose a non-custodial sentence instead of immediate jail time.
