New numbers from the Department for Transport paint a troubling picture: drink-driving deaths in Britain are up 7% compared with a decade ago. In 2023 alone, an estimated 260 people lost their lives because someone got behind the wheel after having too much to drink.
Yes, that’s actually lower than 2022 by about 14%—but still higher than in 2013. And when you zoom out, the impact is stark: drink-driving was involved in 16% of all road deaths last year, and 5% of all road casualties overall.
Interestingly, England and Scotland both clocked in at that same 5% mark, despite Scotland having tougher drink-drive limits. Wales, though, was higher at 7%.
The Government’s Next Move: In-Car Breathalysers
To tackle the problem, the Government is looking at adopting a European-style solution—installing in-car breathalysers, or “alcolocks.” The idea is simple: you blow into the device before starting the car, and if your breath alcohol level is over the limit, the engine won’t start.
Lord Hendy from the Department for Transport confirmed they’re exploring how to require these safety systems in new vehicles, aligning with EU regulations.
Why the Status Quo Isn’t Working
RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis didn’t mince words. He called the figures “disturbing” and “unacceptable,” pointing out that the share of deaths linked to drink-driving hasn’t really budged since the late 1980s.
And it’s not just alcohol—drug-driving is now causing a record number of fatal crashes too. Dennis says a “new approach” is urgently needed, and that alcolocks could be a game-changer—especially for repeat offenders.
RAC research shows most drivers actually support giving courts the power to order alcolocks for offenders, and they’ve been pushing since 2022 for all new cars to be built ready for easy installation. They also back giving police the power to instantly disqualify anyone who fails a roadside drink or drug test.
