In response to a reported 13-year high in road fatalities, leading police authorities in the United Kingdom are proposing stricter drink-driving regulations and the implementation of immediate roadside penalties.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners are urging the government to lower the legal blood alcohol limit from the current 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres to 50 milligrams, aligning with Scotland’s standards. This adjustment would mean that consuming less than one pint of medium-strength beer could result in exceeding the legal limit.
Sussex Chief Constable Jo Shiner, the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for roads policing, stated: “In policing, we see the damaging impact of drink and drug driving all too often, and every fatality or serious injury which happens as a consequence of this is completely avoidable.” She added, “Driving under the influence of drink or drugs will not be tolerated, and we support the BMA’s call for lowering the legal blood alcohol … .”
The British Medical Association (BMA) also supports reducing the limit to 50 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. For newly qualified drivers and those in professional driving roles, the BMA recommends an even stricter limit of 20 milligrams per 100 millilitres, effectively prohibiting any alcohol consumption before driving.
Additionally, there is a push for legislation that would allow police officers to impose immediate interim driving bans at the roadside for individuals who fail breathalyser tests. This measure aims to enhance road safety by promptly removing impaired drivers from the roads.
The government has yet to respond to these proposals, and any legislative changes would require time to implement.
