UK police have announced the results of Operation Limit, a six-week national crackdown on drink and drug driving. The operation, which ran from late 2023 to early 2024, saw nearly 9,000 motorists arrested for driving under the influence. The campaign targeted drivers across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, focusing on areas with a known history of road traffic accidents linked to drink and drug driving.
During the operation, police stopped over 66,000 vehicles, administering breath tests and drug wipes to drivers suspected of being under the influence. Of the 52,667 roadside breath tests conducted, 5,352 drivers either tested positive, failed the test, or refused to take it altogether. In addition, 6,273 roadside drug wipes were administered, with 53.6% of those tested showing positive results for drug use.
Police chiefs have expressed concern over the high number of offences, with many drivers not fully appreciating the dangers posed by driving while impaired. Jo Shiner, the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) lead for roads policing, highlighted that the majority of offenders were men aged 25 and over. She also noted that drug driving, in particular, has been increasing, with many drivers unaware of the long-term effects that some substances can have on their ability to drive.
The NPCC continues to work closely with local police forces to tackle the issue of impaired driving. Authorities have called on the public to report any suspected drink or drug drivers they may encounter, either directly to the police or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
Operation Limit also included an education component, with police forces running awareness campaigns to remind drivers of the serious consequences of driving under the influence. These campaigns included information on how even small amounts of alcohol or drugs can significantly impair driving ability, leading to fatal accidents.
