Drink-Driver Jailed After Passenger’s Death in Newport Pagnell

Oct 1, 2024

A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison after causing the death of his passenger in a crash near Newport Pagnell. The young man was found to have been over the legal drink-driving limit when he lost control of his vehicle, which ultimately resulted in the death of his friend, a 22-year-old male who was travelling with him at the time. The incident occurred earlier this year, shocking the local community and sparking renewed calls for greater awareness of the dangers of drink driving.

According to reports, the defendant had consumed several pints of beer before deciding to drive home. On the way, he lost control of the car on a sharp bend and collided with a tree. Emergency services arrived at the scene, but the passenger was pronounced dead shortly after. The driver, who survived with minor injuries, was arrested at the scene after failing a breathalyser test.

In court, the victim’s family gave emotional statements, expressing their heartache and grief over the loss of their son. His mother said, “This was completely avoidable, and our lives will never be the same again.”

The judge, in handing down the sentence, condemned the driver’s actions, highlighting the devastating consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol. He stressed the need for individuals to understand the dangers posed not only to themselves but also to others on the road.

This tragic case has reignited debate about whether tougher penalties are needed for those caught drink driving, with some calling for longer custodial sentences and stricter enforcement measures. Local police have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on drink drivers and continue to encourage the public to report suspicious driving behaviour.

The driver’s sentence also includes a five-year driving ban following his release, and he will be required to take an extended driving test before being allowed back on the road.
