In recent weeks, Lancashire Police have arrested 271 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or for refusing to provide a breath sample. This crackdown was part of a targeted operation during the festive period to ensure road safety.
Among the arrested was a woman who was nearly four times over the legal alcohol limit. She was caught after allegedly hitting a parked car on New Mill Street in Eccleston and attempting to mask the alcohol on her breath by eating mints. A vigilant member of the public confiscated her car keys before the police arrived. She failed a roadside breath test with a reading of 130 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, well over the legal limit of 35. She was arrested and later provided a reading of 119 micrograms at the police station. Claire Hesketh, 34, from Ormskirk, has been charged with driving with excess alcohol and is scheduled to appear at Preston Magistrates’ Court on 29th January.
In another incident on 30th December, police pursued a Seat Ateca that was speeding through the Ribbleton area of Preston. The driver, who refused to provide a breath or drug sample, was eventually arrested. Kristopher Dimmock, 36, from Ribbleton, faces charges of failing to stop, failing to cooperate with a preliminary test, and driving with alcohol above the limit. He is due in court on 12th April.
Superintendent Hassan Khan of Lancashire Police’s special operations emphasised the seriousness of drink and drug driving. He stated that despite the festive focus, the police would continue to target impaired drivers year-round. The recent arrests demonstrate the force’s commitment to tackling this dangerous behaviour and ensuring the safety of all road users.
The police’s proactive measures have also included stopping 1,804 vehicles, conducting 1,514 breath tests, and administering 34 drug wipes. While the majority of drivers complied with the law, the significant number of arrests highlights the ongoing issue of impaired driving. The police’s message remains clear: drink and drug driving is never acceptable, and offenders will be brought to justice.
