A woman who clipped an HGV while drink driving on the A500 has appeared before magistrates at Staffordshire Justice Centre.
The court heard that the lorry hit her vehicle as she cut across in front of it, sending her own vehicle into a spin, leading to a total of 24 emergency vehicles being sent to the scene of the accident on September 28.
After detailing the events of the accident, the prosecution concluded: “It was very fortunate that there were no serious injuries caused. The defendant gave a positive reading and was arrested.”
“She is of previous good character but she’s lost that here today.”
She was later found to have 44mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal limit for drink driving is 35mcg.
Representing herself in court, the 39-year-old said: “I had a couple of drinks the night before. I work in Uttoxeter and I had to travel to work early. I recently had a head injury.
“When I was checking my blind spot I don’t think I turned enough. I had a couple of glasses of wine the night before. I’m a casual drinker – I don’t drink excessive amounts.”
After hearing a guilty plea to drink driving, Chair Carol Colclough said: “The safety of others is very much in our thoughts with sentencing.”
The woman was banned from the roads for 14 months and ordered to pay a total of £521 in fines, costs, and the victim surcharge.
