Dream Career On Hold For Ten Years For Man Caught Drug Driving

Jun 14, 2022

A young man who dreamed of getting his HGV licence will have to delay his plans for another ten years after appearing before magistrates charged with drug driving.

Prosecuting, Angela Trafford told North Staffordshire Justice Centre: “Officers noticed a vehicle being driven by this defendant. They believed the defendant was travelling at speed and followed him to a safe place.

“When the vehicle pulled over, police spoke to the defendant and could smell cannabis in the car. He was fully compliant with a drug swipe which was positive.”

Analysis following his arrest on suspicion of drug driving found the defendant to have more than the legal limit for THC – the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis – in his system.

Representing himself and addressing the court, the man said at the time of his arrest it had been 36 hours since he had smoked the class B drug and didn’t know he would still be affected.

“I wanted to get an HGV licence but you can’t apply for 10 years after a ban,” he added.

After hearing a guilty plea to drug driving, Chair of the bench Joanne Fox told him: “You have shown maturity today by accepting your actions. This is a blemish on your record. Driving under the influence of drugs is not acceptable. You have learned a very severe lesson.”

The man was banned from driving for twelve months and must pay a fine of £176 plus £169 in court costs and charges.
