A 78-year-old man has been banned from the roads after a drink driving accident in which he ran over and killed his pet dog.
Taunton magistrates heard that the man had driven his Jaguar onto his driveway from the road, colliding with a parked car as he did so.
He then reversed and drove forward again, hitting his border collie and causing fatal injuries.
Police attended the scene of the accident and arrested the driver after he failed a roadside breath test which found him twice the legal limit for drink driving.
Investigating officer, Special Constable Christopher Rees, said: “There can be no excuse for getting behind the wheel intoxicated. This case demonstrates the devastating consequences that driving under the influence of alcohol can have.”
After pleading guilty to drink driving, the man was banned from driving for 17 months and ordered to pay £379 in costs and fines.
